I believe physical material comes into my life as a gift. Sometimes these gifts arrive because I'm in the right place at the right time. Sometimes I go looking for them.
This series began when I happened upon an estate sale with my daughter and found a handful of playful silk embroidered handkerchiefs; a color and material jackpot. Back home, I set them down next to a pile of scrap painted wood in the corner of my basement, leftover from paintings I'd made almost five years earlier. The handkerchiefs and the wood were a match made in heaven.
A few weeks later, on a trip to Milwaukee, I found a thrift store and hunted down more silk handkerchiefs. I used every scrap of wood and every handkerchief to make this limited series of playful block paintings.
